Purpose of the Network Spinal Surgery Study Days
The spinal surgery study days, facilitated by the Spinal Network, are designed to provide comprehensive educational experiences for healthcare professionals involved in the care of spinal surgery patients. These multidisciplinary sessions cater to both spinal and non-spinal partner sites, ensuring that all participants gain valuable insights tailored to their specific needs.
Key components of the study days
Spinal anatomy and physiology: Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of the spinal column and spinal cord, including the intricacies of spinal anatomy and its physiological functions.
Spinal conditions: The study days will cover a spectrum of spinal conditions, both degenerative and emergency, equipping participants with the knowledge to recognise and care for patients with these conditions effectively.
Surgical procedures and indications: Detailed discussions on various spinal surgery procedures will be included, along with indications for each type, allowing participants to understand the rationale behind surgical interventions.
Spinal orthotics: Education on the use and application of spinal orthotics will be provided, emphasising their role in patient recovery and support.
Neurogenic bowel and bladder Management: Theoretical sessions and hands-on workshops will focus on managing neurogenic bowel and bladder issues, a common concern for spinal patients.
Assessment and post-operative care: Participants will learn about comprehensive spinal assessments and the critical aspects of post-operative care, including nursing management of complications, early mobilisation strategies, and patient education for effective recovery.
Case study group work: Interactive case study discussions will encourage collaborative learning, enabling participants to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Learning Outcomes
The overarching goal of the Spinal Surgery Study Days is to develop a basic level of understanding necessary for managing spinal patients in acute settings. Participants will leave with:
Enhanced knowledge of spinal anatomy, conditions, and surgical procedures.
Skills in assessing and caring for spinal patients post-operatively.
Familiarity with appropriate interventions for complications and the promotion of early mobilisation.
Strategies for effective patient education and support during the recovery process.
By fostering a collaborative learning environment, the Spinal Surgery Study Days aim to improve the quality of care provided to spinal surgery patients while empowering healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed for effective management in acute settings.
